There are two types of safety nets used for scaffolding and construction: 1.) debris netting, which wraps around the structure for debris containment, and 2.) fall arrest netting, which is often positioned close to the ground to catch anything or anyone that may pass through the nets above.

In this guide, we’ll focus more on the latter, explaining what fall arrest netting is, how it works, and why it should be paired with debris netting

What Is Fall Arrest Netting?

Fall arrest netting is a passive fall protection system made of a larger mesh that is stretched horizontally and anchored with an edge rope. It’s designed to absorb the impact of a falling person or heavy equipment.

It looks quite similar to guardrail nets, but fall arrest is usually set up beneath the work area to cushion any falls, rather than being attached to guardrails or access points like ladders.

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require employers to take measures to prevent falls from height and to provide workers with anti-fall PPEs, e.g., a fall arrest harness. Fall arrest netting is one of the options to comply with these regulations. It’s commonplace in scaffolding and other construction activities, such as under-hall roofs.

How Does Fall Arrest Netting Work?

Fall arrest netting works as a safety measure to minimise the fall distance and reduce the risk of injury—instead of preventing the fall itself. The net is set up flat and stretches, or its knots tighten, when someone falls onto it. This reduces the impact on the person’s body, as opposed to hitting the ground directly.

What Is the Standard for Fall Arrest Netting?

The standard for fall arrest netting is EN 1263-1. EN 1263-1 specific safety requirements and test methods that ensure quality and performance for effective and reliable anti-fall protection.

When looking for one online, make sure the product has been marked in accordance with EN 1263-1. This fall arrest net, for one, conforms to this and even comes with certification for assurance. The certificate will likely include the following details:

  • Name of the manufacturer, supplier, or importer
  • Compliance designation per EN 1263-1
  • Product details (including net class, mesh orientation, mesh size, and dimensions of the net)
  • Month and year of production
  • Certification test number from the testing authority

Can You Use It with Debris Netting?

Yes, fall arrest nets can be used together with debris netting or scaffold sheeting to double the protection for people working at heights and below.

For instance, if a tool or material slips as workers move around, the debris netting catches it. In the event that a worker loses their balance and falls, the fall arrest safety net will buffer the shock and create a safe landing. This two-layered safety approach on construction sites is crucial, where the risk of falls and falling debris is higher.
