3 Ways to Protect Carpets During Home Renovations
SP Group Global Ltd

There are carpets you can roll out and tuck away if a certain area in your home needs renovation. However, for a type of carpeting like wall-to-wall broadloom, redoing it can be complicated. In situations like this, it’s better to leave it as is — but it doesn’t have to remain exposed during construction.

There are ways to protect it and keep its condition while the work is being done. Here are 3 methods you can apply to avoid your carpet being stained or damaged.

1. Do not move furniture across carpets

Moving furniture may be necessary to clear a room for renovation or remodelling. If you need to do this, enlist the help of a family member or friend to lift and relocate items like sofas or cabinets. Take advantage of moving blankets or furniture glides to make the process easier, especially for heavy or large pieces. This will help prevent damage to your furniture and your carpet or other surfaces.

Note: Dragging furniture across carpets can increase the risk of snagging, tearing, and other damage due to friction.

2. Invest in carpet coverings

If you think removing your carpet isn’t necessary, better yet, cover it for protection. There are various coverings available that shield your carpet from stains, dust, and moisture. Here are some commonly used products to give you ideas:

  • Carpet films: STIXX Carpet Protector is an excellent example of how effective this method can be. This low-tack, clear adhesive film keeps the carpet underneath in good condition throughout the project. It shields it from dust, spills, and foot traffic while preventing damage to the threads. You can put your trust in this product for up to 90 days, compared to the 30-60 days most standard carpet films offer.
  • Thick flooring paper: This is a better alternative if you want a thicker covering for your carpets. Take Tuffcard, for instance. It’s made from recycled light kraft paper — a tougher, more durable version of regular cardboard. It’s thick enough to handle medium foot traffic and heavy-duty impacts. This ensures the fibres won’t flatten, tangle, or look worn due to pressure.

Such an investment goes a long way in keeping your carpets looking good and lasting longer. It also helps you avoid potential costs for repairs if damage occurs. To understand the difference this makes, check out our guide, ‘What Are Remedial Works in Construction and Their Costs?’

3. Contain the dust

Dust can be abrasive. These tiny particles can act like glass shards that can damage carpet fibres with every step if they become embedded. The best solution to this is to contain the dust by isolating the renovation area. Use polyethylene sheeting or dust sheet to minimise the risk of dusty residue from reaching and damaging the carpets in adjacent spaces.

If carpets are installed in the renovation area, cover them with a protective film or thick flooring paper for direct protection. Still, you’ll want to seal off the work area, so the dust won’t spread into other rooms.

Tips: If your budget allows, set up negative air machines with HEPA filters to reduce the amount of dust that escapes within the room. Also, here’s our guide to ‘Dust Control Solutions for Clean and Safe Construction Zones’ if you want to learn more about it.

With the right carpet protector and methods, you’ll have fewer worries, save money on costly maintenance and repairs, and extend the lifespan of your carpet. Be sure to vacuum the carpets before and after the renovation to prevent premature wear. This will help keep your carpets smelling fresh, clean, and welcoming.
