There’s a lot of movement on a construction site, and this includes moving fittings from one place to another. The best way to carry them is in fitting bags. Here, we explain their common uses and what they can safely carry for more efficient use on your next project.

Carrying Scaffold Fittings

On scaffold work, there are couplers, base plates, ledger clamps, brace fittings, guardrail clips, and the odd handful of nuts and bolts. On top of that, you’re moving between ground level and height, sometimes across different bays. That’s what makes fitting bags useful.

You can keep everything* grouped by lift or section, and others can do the same. It’s a shared effort with less handling, cutting down the back-and-forth.

*Fitting bags must be loaded within their SWL (Safe Working Load). For instance, if the limit is 40kg, don’t go above it. This applies regardless of the content.

Sorting Construction Materials by Job or Zone

On larger construction sites, different trades work side by side. Fitting bags come in handy in splitting materials by task or location before shift starts. For instance:

  • One bag prepared for an electrical run on a specific floor

  • Another for plumbing work during first fix in a different area

  • A third set for ceiling or overhead work where access is limited

The bags are tagged or labelled by floor, zone, or task, and some uses colour-coded tags. This reduces re‑handling and prevents other trades from taking the wrong materials.

Improving Access in Tight or Elevated Spaces

In areas like scaffolds, ladders, and confined spaces, there isn’t much room for carrying a toolbox or loose parts. It can slow you down and make movement harder. Fitting bags are used to bring up only what’s needed, instead of making repeated trips down.

What’s more, using the bags also helps contain loose parts, keeping walkways and platforms clear, and lowering the risk of slips.

Separating Reusable Parts During Demolition

Not everything removed from a space is a waste during strip-out work. Brackets, connectors, fixing, and even some temporary protection products (such as scaffold protection like ball joint caps and fitting caps) can often be reused.

Fitting bags are helpful in separating them with general waste and debris, including asbestos which are contained in asbestos bags. Anything worth keeping is collected straight away, saving time on sorting later.

What Can Fitting Bags Carry Safely

Fitting bags are suited for non‑sharp, non‑hazardous, dry materials that won’t damage the woven material or lifting loops.

Safe examples are (in addition to those mentioned above):

  • Steel fixings and mechanical fasteners

  • PVC or metal pipe fittings

  • Light brackets and assemblies

Unsafe uses include:

  • Rubble, bricks, or broken concrete

  • Sharp scrap metal with exposed edges

  • Wet waste or contaminated materials

  • Overloaded mixed waste

These uses increase the risk of bag failure during lifting and can breach site lifting plans and risk assesment

Additional instructions for the safe use of fitting bags:

  • Avoid snatching or shock loading during lifting or transportation.

  • Only use lifting gear that is tested and approved for the purpose.

  • Protect the bag from prolonged exposure to sunlight and/or rain.

  • Do not leave a suspended bag unattended at any time or lift the bag if the loops are twisted.

  • Under no circumstances should a damaged or second-hand bag be used, and do not attempt to repair it.

Fitting bags are used for storing and carrying fittings around the site, not waste. Only load them with suitable materials within their SWL. Always follow site lifting plans and manufacturer guidance.

Our fitting bags are made of strong woven polypropylene with 40kg SWL. Bulk orders are available to keep your site stocked.
