The SWL of a tonne bag is 1,000 kg. That’s the maximum load it’s rated to carry under normal conditions. The load can also depend on the following:
Density – Different materials weigh different amounts even if they take up the same space.
Condition – Damaged or worn bags may not be able to safely hold their full rated load.
Lifting method used – How the bag is lifted (e.g. evenly using all loops or not) can affect how much weight it can safely handle.
Exceeding the SWL can increase the risk of bag failure, split seams, damaged lifting loops, dropped loads, and site injuries.
Always use the rating provided by the manufacturer. Say, an SWL of 500kg = maximum safe load of 500kg; 1,00kg = 1 tonne.
Volume vs Weight

Safe Handling Tips for Tonne Bags on Construction Sites
Check all four loops before lifting. All lift loops and seams must be intact. Any flaw reduces bag strength. If a loop looks worn, frayed, or stitching is visible, pull the bag from service.
Keep the bag close to the mast when travelling. When moving a tonne bag by forklift, keep it as low as possible with the mast tilted slightly back. A suspended bag raises the truck’s centre of gravity and increases instability.
Use a spreader bar or purpose-built lifting frame. Hooks, spreader bars, or other lifting devices should have rounded edges and no sharp protrusions that could cut into the loops. Sharp edges on forks or hooks are a common cause of loop failure.
Never drag a loaded tonne bag. Dragging stresses the base seam and is one of the fastest ways to compromise the bag’s structural integrity.
Confirm your lifting equipment is rated for the load. Always check that the forklift, crane, or hoist has a rated capacity sufficient to support the weight of the filled bag. Regularly inspect lifting equipment to confirm it’s in working condition.
Inspecting and Storing Tonne Bags
Before every lift, check:
Label is present and SWL is legible
No cuts, tears, or abrasions to the body or base
All four loops intact: no fraying, loose stitching, or visible wear
No previous overload damage (distorted shape, stretched loops)
Fill level is appropriate for the material weight

Keep unused bags protected from rain and the elements where possible.
Don’t stack loaded bags unless you’ve confirmed the base SWL allows it.
Store them away from sharp materials and plant machinery.
