Seal around pipes, cables, conduits, and other penetrations separately rather than relying on the main barrier seal.
2. Leaving the Access Point Open After Entry or Exit
The opening, such as a zip door, gets more wear than any part of the barrier. It’s most likely to be left open “just for a minute”. That minute is when dust escapes.

Workers leave the door flap open while moving materials in and out of the work area

3. Using the Wrong Barrier Material for the Type of Dust
Not all dust-generating work needs the same level of containment, but this is often overlooked during setup.

Lightweight sheeting used in high-traffic or high-airflow areas where it tears or billows
Not accounting for hot works, occupied buildings, or site-specific fire requirements
Standard polythene used for fine, high-volume dust (like silica from cutting or grinding) when it can’t handle the particle load or static buildup

Match the material to the dust type and the task generated.
Fine, hazardous dust (silica, MDF, certain mineral dusts) needs heavier-gauge or reinforced sheeting and a tighter seal than general nuisance dust from demolition debris.
If the site has fire-retardant requirements, confirm the sheeting is rated for it before it goes up, not after a site inspection flags it.
4. Forgetting Overhead and Floor Containment
A lot of barrier setups focus on the vertical walls and forget that dust doesn’t just spread sideways. It settles, and it rises with airflow.
Common mistakes
No ceiling-level containment in spaces with suspended ceilings or open voids, so dust travels above the barrier line
Negative air units positioned without thought for how air moves through the contained space
How to fix them
Treat the barrier as a full enclosure, not four walls. Where there’s a ceiling void or suspended ceiling, contain above it too.
Floor protection should extend slightly beyond the work area to catch tracked dust before it reaches a clean zone.
If negative air pressure is part of the setup, position intake and extraction, so air flows through the space rather than short-circuiting near the door.
5. Setting Up Containment After the Dusty Work Has Started
This is the mistake that undoes every other precaution. Once dust is airborne, containment becomes much harder.
