Scaffolding inspection follows three mandatory stages: before its use, every seven days while in service, and after any event that could affect its stability. 

These checks confirm that the scaffold remains safe and fit for its intended purpose. Whether you’re carrying out inspections yourself or reviewing reports, here’s what to look for. 

How Often Does Scaffolding Need to Be Inspected? 

Inspection doesn’t end once the scaffold has been approved for use. The process looks like this: 

Before first use 

Once the scaffold is erected and before anyone goes on it, a competent person must inspect it and confirm it’s safe. This could be a trained scaffolder, site manager, or supervisor. 

Every seven days 

Weekly inspections are more detailed. These involve checking the main framework, bracing, ties, platforms, and access points. Faulty components need to be repaired or replaced before work continues. 

After adverse weather or structural changes 

High winds over 40mph, heavy rain, snow, or ice all require assessment before work resumes. Extreme weather can loosen fittings, displace components, or create hazardous surfaces. 

The same applies after any alteration, such as adding or removing lifts, changing the configuration, or relocating ties. 

Daily checks 

Daily checks are carried out before the scaffold is used each shift. A good starting point is the foundation and lower structure before moving higher up the scaffold. 

They don’t replace the 7-day inspection, but they are worth doing. 

Scaffold Inspection Checklist for Site Managers 

The list below covers the main areas that are commonly checked during routine checks. 

Overall structure 

Start at the base of the scaffold and continue upwards through the main framework. Pay particular attention to the following: 

  • Bracing in place and tight 

  • Standards plumb, no visible deformation 

  • Foundations stable and foot plates (treddas

  • Ledgers and transoms correctly spaced and secure 

  • Ties intact, correct spacing, not removed or altered 

Any missing, damaged, or altered components should be reported and corrected before the scaffold is used again. 

Access 

Safe access is just as important as the structure itself. Even a fully compliant scaffold can become a risk if workers can’t get on and off it safely. 

  • Access gates should be open and close freely. Check for bent, missing components and any gaps left at platform level. 

  • Ladders must also be fixed and extend above the landing point to provide workers with a handhold when stepping on and off the platform. Look for weakened rungs, signs of wear, and ladders that have shifted out of position. 

Brick guards and toe boards 

Brick guards are mesh panels fitted to guardrails to stop loose materials from falling through the gap between the toe board and the guardrail. 

What to check: 

  • Is the mesh intact: no bent sections, holes, or dislodged panels? 

  • Are fixings secure and not relying on the sheeting or netting to hold them? 

  • Are brick guards fitted where materials are being worked or stored near platform edges? 

  • Is the combination of toe board, mid-rail, and main guardrail leaving any unprotected gap? The unprotected gap must not exceed 470mm. 

Toe boards must be sufficient to prevent a fall and to prevent any material or objects from rolling or being kicked off the edge of the platform. The minimum height is 150mm. 

What to check: 

  • Is it 150mm or above? 

  • Is it secure: no gaps, not loose, not missing fixings? 

  • Is the toe board present on all open edges of working platforms? 

  • Is it free from damage that would compromise its ability to stop materials? 

Scaffold visual tagging system 

These are tags used to show whether a structure is safe to use and when it was last checked. Depending on the design, it can include the following information: 

  • Unique ID number or tracking code 

  • Inspection date 

  • Inspector's name and signature 

  • Scaffold status 

  • Load capacity 

  • Defects or safety concerns 

  • Next inspection due date 

Others follow a colour format. Green tag = safe to use, red tag = do not use, and yellow tag = caution / modified use. 

The information on the scaffold tag should be updated immediately following each inspection. This allows workers, supervisors, and inspectors to verify the scaffolding conditions. 

Scaffold sheeting 

Scaffold sheeting wraps the structure to create an enclosed barrier against wind and rain. It also affects the structural load and has its own inspection requirements. 

Areas to inspect: 

  • Tears and holes: Even small ones compromise weather protection and containment. Any cuts or breaches should be flagged. 

  • Fixings and toggle tiesLoose sections act as a sail in wind and can pull the structure or create a falling hazard. 

  • Condition of the material: UV degradation, prolonged exposure, and physical damage all reduce its effectiveness over time. Check for brittleness, fading, and loss of tension. 

  • FR certification: If FR scaffold sheeting is specified (e.g., for occupied buildings requiring BS EN compliance). Verify that the correct product is being used. 

Debris netting 

Debris netting is specifically designed to catch falling materials and reduce the risk to workers below and the public. Its condition should be checked regularly while in use, focusing on: 

  • Damage and tears: Netting with holes large enough to pass a small object through isn't doing its job. Inspect the full face, not just the areas at eye level. 

  • Fixing to the scaffold: Loose edges, sagging sections, or areas where the netting has detached from the tubes need immediate attention. 

  • Coverage: Gaps at the top or sides of bays are a common issue. Make sure the netting covers the full working face. 

  • Condition after weather: Heavy rain and wind can weaken fixings and distort the netting. 

Like the rest of the scaffold, debris netting benefits from the maintenance routine.

Inspection reports should be retained until the work is complete, and the scaffold has been dismantled. 

Can a scaffold be used if the inspection tag is missing? 

Workers should not use a scaffold with a missing inspection tag unless its status has been confirmed through site records or by the responsible person.
