Event mesh netting can be reused where possible with right handling and rotation practices. Here’s how you can get far more use out of every roll, and when it’s no longer suitable for further projects. Whether that’s for an outdoor event or construction use.
Install Event Mesh Correctly
Reuse starts with proper installation. Done right, event mesh is less likely to get edge damage or stress where it’s attached, keeping it in useable condition.
When fitting event mesh netting, fixing points* should be kept at an equal distance apart and under the same level of tension across the run.
To do this:
Line the mesh up along the full length so it sits straight against the structure.
Start at one end and work along the length, adding fixings at even gaps. Don’t complete all the ties in one area first, as this throws off spacing.
Check the spacing as you go. If any section looks too tight or too wide, adjust it right away to match the rest.
*Fixing points are where the mesh is fastened (e.g., using cable ties) along its edges and the structure, such as fencing, barriers, or scaffolding.
Avoid Overtensioning
One of the common mistakes when installing the mesh is pulling it too tight for it to hold. That’s where you start to see eyelets, hems, and edge sections giving way first, especially in windy conditions.
It just needs even support across the structure. Avoid tightening sections after they’ve been fixed. If one area looks under strain, loosen the fixing to balance the tension.
This keeps pressure off the weakest points, so the mesh netting holds up better for reuse.
Don’t Drag Mesh Across Rough Surfaces
Don’t pull the mesh over fencing, concrete, or asphalt during installation. This happens when it’s moved between fence bays and pulled across the ground instead of being carried over. It can scratch the surface and weaken the material.
It may seem quicker to drag it to save time, but it’s better to carry it forward to reduce wear and avoid damage like friction wear.
Remove the Event Mesh Carefully
No matter how careful you were during installation, the mesh can still suffer wear when taking it down. We found these methods helpful:
Don’t pull or rip the ties, cut them instead.
Remove section by section instead of pulling it off one side.
Keep the mesh off mud, standing water, and debris. As soon as it comes down, roll it and keep it away from sharp objects.
Inspect for any small tears, loose hems, and damaged eyelets before storing it away. This allows you to decide whether the mesh is ready for another project, needs repair, or should be retired.
Store It Between Projects
Speaking of storage, make sure the event mesh is dry, kept in indoor storage, and rolled in large sections.
If it has been exposed to rain, let it air out.
Store it away from heat and direct sunlight.
Roll instead of folding it when possible. Repeated hard folds can leave permanent creases.
Rotate Event Mesh Across Different Projects
Not every setup needs a brand-new event mesh. Follow these rotation practices to get more value from it.
Use newer mesh in high-visibility areas, such as:
Main entrances
Public-facing fencing
Perimeter frontage
Roadside sections
Customer-facing areas
Media or viewing areas
Reuse ‘used’ mesh in lower-risk or low-visibility zones like:
Staff-only zones
Temporary segregation areas
Loading and unloading spaces
Staging areas behind barriers or structures
Maintenance or contractor working sections
The mesh can be reused as long as it’s still in good condition with no tears, edge damage, or weak fixing points.
Tip: Keep reusable event mesh organised. Label it by condition or usage, e.g., one group for “high-visibility areas” and another for “lower-risk” use. This avoids wasting usable mesh and prevents worn sections from being used in the wrong areas.
When Event Mesh Netting Shouldn’t Be Reused
It should be replaced if you notice the following:
Wind damage
Torn or stretched sections
Damaged hems or eyelets
Material brittleness or cracking
Failed fixings that affect stability
Faded or unreadable graphics (if custom printed)
